At Colemans, our approach to social value is rooted in delivering outcomes that have real, lasting impact, beyond our core engineering expertise and into the communities we serve. Our involvement in the Changemaker programme with Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity is a clear reflection of that commitment.
The Changemaker initiative brings together organisations and individuals who believe in long-term partnership rather than one-off support. Its purpose is simple but powerful: to enable world-class paediatric care by funding innovation, improving environments, and supporting clinicians so they can deliver the very best outcomes for children and families.
Investing in Care That Makes a Difference
As part of our participation, Colemans committed £75,000 to the programme, supporting the hospital’s investment into various projects and also the outright procurement of two transcutaneous carbon dioxide monitoring devices. These machines are advanced, non-invasive technology used to assess respiratory function in children with complex needs.
Recently members of our team (Bryan Bradshaw, Lesley Morris BSc FCA, Sukhi Anand and Claire Payne) visited the hospital to see the equipment in place and to speak directly with the medical teams who will be using it. Hearing from clinicians about the difference these devices will make brought the impact of the partnership into sharp focus. Not only do they increase the number of patients that can be assessed and monitored, they also make home-based monitoring possible which is an essential option for children who find hospital environments challenging or for whom regular hospital visits are simply not feasible.
With an anticipated lifespan of 10 to 15 years, these devices represent a highly effective and sustainable investment. Over time, they will support hundreds of additional patient assessments, relieve pressure on inpatient services, and help families access care in a way that is more comfortable, and more dignified.
A Partnership Powered by People
What truly brings the Changemaker programme to life is the human connection behind it. For Colemans, that connection has been strengthened through the involvement of our people particularly Executive Assistant, Sukhi Anand, who has been closely engaged since the very start of our journey as a Changemaker Partner.
“This isn’t just about business for me; it’s deeply personal. I’ve lived with asthma since I was three years old, and having spent time in hospital myself from such a young age, I know exactly what it feels like to be the child in that bed. I understand the importance of world-class care and the difference a supportive environment makes when you are fighting for your health.
Being a Changemaker is our way at Colemans, of ensuring that the next generation of children at Birmingham Children’s Hospital have the best possible equipment and spaces to help them get better. I feel truly lucky that my role at Colemans enables me to get so closely involved in this project; bridging our corporate success with our responsibility to the community. It is a privilege to give back, and a project that truly means the world to me.”
Alongside regular engagement with the hospital, Sukhi has also played an active role alongside other members of our team at Colemans, in additional fundraising initiatives, including the hospital’s annual Dragon Boat Race, where our team raised over a further £5000, strengthening the connection between Colemans, the charity, and the communities the hospital serves.
