Colemans were appointed as a multi-discipline contractor to undertake structural alterations, soft strip, de-planting and screed removal, within the iconic Bullring Shopping Centre in the heart of Birmingham city centre.
The former Debenhams store comprised four former retail floors, three below ground storage floors and an extensive roof plant zone, totalling 24,000m2.
Mindful of its city centre location, a robust logistics strategy was developed with our client and the Centre Management team to ensure minimal impact was caused to shoppers, visitors and tenants.
Works were carefully sequenced to allow activities to progress on multiple work faces, whilst ensuring generated waste material was moved through the structure ready for removal from site via our waste segregation and processing area.
The team also designed and installed extensive propping to facilitate the formation of several large structural openings through various floors. This alteration works included the carefully coordinated release, lowering and processing of redundant steels, some in excess of 1.5 tonnes.
As part of the soft strip, seven large escalators were supported, lowered and recycled as well as nine lift decommissions over several floors.
Committed to supporting the local community, Colemans were also able to work with local charities by donating a wide variety of remaining equipment from the former store, including a kitchen, seating, display stands and Christmas decorations.
